Agritourism is a subset of rural tourism as a broader concept (Clarke, 1999; Nilsson, 2002). Traditionally thought of as being simply farm stays and winery visits, the term agritourism now encompasses a wide variety of activities where agriculture and tourism intersect. Essentially it is the act of going to a region to visit a farm or food-related business (including restaurants, markets/events, produce outlets and natural attractions) for enjoyment, education, or to participate in activities and events.

Agritourism presents a clear opportunity for regions around Australia. However, it’s not simply a matter of converting farm businesses into tourism operations. To embrace the potential of agritourism we need to address infrastructure gaps that present barriers to farm enterprises who want to explore the opportunity that agritourism offers. To be successful, any regional, state or national agritourism strategy must holistically address the challenges faced by rural and regional communities. This includes lack of fast and reliable internet, improvements to road infrastructure and planning considerations, as well as educating and supporting both producers and regional communities on the role and rewards of the visitor economy.

1. The main attraction here is the lovely peaceful landscapes of hills and lakes that make up this huge ranch, and it’s absolutely ideal for roaming on horse back. The owners provide horse back riding lessons too and all levels of ability are catered for. And there will be plenty of wildlife to be seen along the way; foxes, coyotes, eagles and deer to name but a few.You can go fishing, swimming, waterskiing or take a boat out on Lake Diefenbaker as well, and at the ranch you can play games of pool, table tennis and horseshoe or try out some dummy steer roping.

2. Not far from the town of  Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, this is a B&B farm stay with a difference, the animals here are husky sleigh dogs and in winter the dogs are there to take guests out on some great adventures across the snow fields of the Yukon Territory. They have a range of rooms and cottages some of which come with a kitchen and all guests have access to the very nice on-site restaurant with local food specialities including plenty of bison and caribou meat.

3. There is free WiFi throughout, a kitchenette, lounge and cosy fireplace. Outside you have a nice little patio with outside seats and barbecue facilities and you are free to wander around the farm and meet the animals and just take in the amazing views of the surrounding forests and mountains. There’s plenty of good hiking around here as you might imagine and your hosts will be more than happy to advise you plus you’ll find good fishing, canoeing and cycling opportunities too. The farm produces some quality home made food and they serve a great breakfast every morning. They have an on site farm shop too where you can buy more of their produce to take home.
