Some succulents (e.g., cacti) store water only in the stem and have no leaves or very small leaves (thorn), whereas others (e.g., agaves) store water mainly in the leaves. The word “succulent” comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning juice or sap. The succulents enable to survive on limited water resources, such as dew and mist, making them more tolerant of drought.

Succulent can grow in containers on patio, on garden bed or even as groundcovers between the paves. Succulents are popular as a plant that retain moisture very well and can survive in drought and extreme weather. However, they still need to be watered at least once a week or a deep soaking every few weeks during growing season. The roots of the succulent are easily rot if there is too much water in the soil. The types of soil that suitable for planting succulents is the soil that drains and dry out quickly after watering. Succulents do best with soil that is poor, which filled with a lot of inorganic elements. Despite their need for well-draining soil, they also need to be supplied with nutrients that usually can be obtained from organic elements.
